Chris and I had our hearts set on Dominican Republic for our adoption. When we called the agency to inquire about this country we were told it was on hold until maybe September. We then started exploring the possibility of Ethiopia. Here are some of the differences of the adoption process for these countries... (using KidsLink International Agency)
Dominican Republic
*Adoptive families must be open to accepting a referral for either a boy or a girl
*At least one of the adoptive parents must reside for 60 days in the Dominican before returning home with their child
*Less immunizations are needed for DR
*Referrals are about 6-9 months after dossier is received in DR
*Travel time is 4-6 weeks after receiving referral
*Agency fees are $1000 more
*Adoption fees for country are $1000 more
Ethiopia
*Adoptive families can request gender of child, sibling groups, twins or more than one child
*Parents are strongly recommended to travel to Ethiopia for 10 days to pick up their child but arrangements can be made for someone from the agency to bring your child home to you.
*It is recommended to have immunizations for many different things (see post below)
*Referrals are about 3-6 months after dossier is received in Ethiopia
*Travel time is 3-5 months after referral
*Agency fees are $1000 less
*Adoption fees for country are $1000 less
In the end, both countries have precious children needing families.
