Moving along...

We are having our next homestudy meeting tomorrow night. We should only need one more and then our Social Worker can write up the updated report. We are still optimistic about having our file prepared for Ethiopia by the end of September. We can expect a referral as soon as 3 months later! WOW - it's getting real!

We have been talking about "baby sister" for 3 months now and we pray for her each night. The boys are very excited but they have also gone through the adoption process before. Alyssa isn't having as easy a time. She talks about her baby sister a lot and says she will share her toys with her and she sees things at the store that she says we should buy her. But, she also will ask us questions like "why do you want another little girl?" "Do we have to get a new baby sister?" I showed her a picture of an Ethiopian little girl the other day and Alyssa said, "I don't like that color of skin - and mommy, she'll be Chinese!" So, there are lots of things going on in Alyssa's head about this adoption! We are talking to her about all the things we can think of to help her with her questions and concerns. I guess in the end, it's typical of a 3 year old and of a girl used to being the only "princess" in the house.

News on the Dominican Program

I found out yesterday that the Dominican Program will not be accepting families any time soon. The agency is having some difficulty with the families already waiting for child proposals and the Dominican gov't so they are not accepting any more families until all these families complete their adoptions. This could take months. Now we need to decide for sure if we want to adopt from Ethiopia. I really want to but Chris had his heart set on the Dominican. We'll continue to pray for God's guidance for sure!

Domincan Repubic vs Ethiopia

Chris and I had our hearts set on Dominican Republic for our adoption. When we called the agency to inquire about this country we were told it was on hold until maybe September. We then started exploring the possibility of Ethiopia. Here are some of the differences of the adoption process for these countries... (using KidsLink International Agency)

Dominican Republic

*Adoptive families must be open to accepting a referral for either a boy or a girl
*At least one of the adoptive parents must reside for 60 days in the Dominican before returning home with their child
*Less immunizations are needed for DR
*Referrals are about 6-9 months after dossier is received in DR
*Travel time is 4-6 weeks after receiving referral
*Agency fees are $1000 more
*Adoption fees for country are $1000 more

Ethiopia

*Adoptive families can request gender of child, sibling groups, twins or more than one child
*Parents are strongly recommended to travel to Ethiopia for 10 days to pick up their child but arrangements can be made for someone from the agency to bring your child home to you.
*It is recommended to have immunizations for many different things (see post below)
*Referrals are about 3-6 months after dossier is received in Ethiopia
*Travel time is 3-5 months after referral
*Agency fees are $1000 less
*Adoption fees for country are $1000 less

In the end, both countries have precious children needing families.

Travel Clinic Visit

I visited with the nurse at the Travel Clinic to find out what immunizations Chris and I would need to travel to Ethiopia or Dominican. I also wanted to see what the kids would need if we decided to take them with us! Hmmm...I'm definitely second guessing taking the kids now....

Ethiopia

Adults
Tammy - 3rd shot of Twinrix - $70 (I had the first 2 before I went to China)
Chris - 2nd dose of Havrix - $75 (He has his first before China)

Yellow Fever - $100/each
Typhoid - $50/each
TdPolio - $25/each - just Tammy, Chris already has it

Lariam medication for malaria - $25/ea

Total $520

Kids
Yellow Fever - $100 each
Meningococcal - $135/each - definitely the children would need this one and it was optional for Chris and I
Rabies - recommended for the kids, especially Alyssa as she is so young - it takes 3 needles and each needle is $165
Hep A - all 3 kids would need this shot at $80 each

Total: $2430 - so that alone is enough for us to say "I don't think the kids will be coming"! I will have to talk with some other families who took their children and find out what they recommend for vaccinations.

Dominican Republic

Twinrix - Tammy
Havrix - Chris

Optional: Lariam - malaria medication

Hep A - all 3 kids

The Timeline so far...

June 2007 - Decided to inquire about adopting from other countries...

June 11-15, 2007 - Began emailing Kids Link and CAFAC asking tons of questions about Dominican Republic and Ethiopia. Found out Dominican program is not open to Canadians right now as they are waiting to see how the first group of families make out with their adoption journeys. We will find out in September if Kids Link is accepting more families. In the meantime, we inquired about the Ethiopian adoption process.

June 15-20 - Called Provincial adoption coordinator, Richie Mayne, to discuss possibilities of domestic adoption and international adoption. We were told it would be about a 4 year wait to adopt a toddler child domestically. Richie also expressed concern about adopting from Ethiopia only because the Province hasn't done adoptions from this country. We are very confident the agencies working on behalf of the children in Ethiopia or Dominican will have the proper paperwork ready for referral.

June 25 - called the 3 social workers in PEI who are able to do homestudies for international adoptions. All 3 were booked until the end of August. This was disappointing but we decided to go ahead and collect all our dossier documents so they would be ready and waiting when a social worker became available.

June 26 - applied for grant from Orphan's Hope. Update: we heard back on August 2nd from Orphan's Hope and our name was not drawn in July. They will be doing another draw in August but will only be drawing 1 name out of 50 applicants. PRAY!

June 27 - we decided on which social worker we would be using for our homestudy. She agreed to update our homestudy from our last adoption rather than start all over again. This is great because it will save a lot of time and also cost a lot less. We are now waiting until August 20th to begin our homestudy meetings.

June 27 - we decided officially to use Kids Link as our adoption agency. We sent off application forms to them!

June 29- July 15 - Began the paperchase for real!
*Got our police checks done (FREE) and fingerprinting done from the RCMP ($60/each)
*Obtained letters of employment from our employers
*Notorized photocopies of necessary documents (birth certificates, marriage license, passports, health cards, driver's licenses)
*Copied proof of home and life insurance
*Wrote our "letter of request to adopt" for Ethiopian and Dominican officials
*Got pictures of our house and family printed
*Notice of Assessments from Revenue Canada
*Asked 4 friends to write letters of reference for us

Luckily, we had many of these from our last adoption so it was just a matter of updating a few items and organizing them all.

July 5 - received our adoption questionairres in the mail - booklets we need to fill out for our social worker on why we want to adopt, challenges in adoption, etc... Update: Of course, mine is finished and Chris hasn't started his :-(

August 6 - meeting with Travel Clinic to talk about vaccinations and medicines. This may sound premature but we may be taking the children with us and we want to be sure they have their needles. Some need to be taken months in advance. I think Chris and I are covered as we did all these for our last adoption trip to China. We may need to get one more for Yellow Fever which is required to travel to Ethiopia.

August 8 - Our medicals will be completed. This is the last bit of paperwork we need to complete our dossier (besides the updated homestudy, of course!)

August 22 - Our first meeting to update our homestudy. We are hoping to have 2 meetings to update our homestudy and then our social worker will get it all together for us to send to the Province for approval!!!! YAY!

August 29 - Our second meeting to update the homestudy. Our social worker is hoping this will be all we need as far as meetings go and then she will take a couple of weeks to write up the homestudy and then on to provincial approval!

Starting the process...

I am so thrilled to be in the adoption process again! Our family adopted our daughter, Alyssa, 2.5 years ago from Hunan, China. It was an amazing journey, an emotional & overwhelming experience, and an event that changed our whole family!

Due to the changes by the Chinese gov't in regards to adopting from China, we are no longer eligible to go that route. One of the new requirements to adopt from China is each family must have a net worth of much more money than we have. But, that's okay! We are really excited about our new child and learning about a new country. Our hearts will always be in China and we will continue to support as many children there as we can. Our hearts will also be filled with this new country - it's culture, it's people and most importantly, our child.

Chris and I decided to adopt again after returning home from a trip to Dominican Republic. We experienced many feelings and emotions while visiting the children there and we felt God was leading us to another child. Right now we are waiting to hear if we are able to adopt a child from Dominican - we should know in September. If not, we will be adopting from Ethiopia.

We have all our dossier documents ready and waiting. Unforntunately, all the social workers in PEI were booked until the end of August so we are waiting until August 20th to have our homestudy updated. We are hoping to have our dossier and homestudy ready for provincial approval by the beginning of September.

This is too exciting!!!
